Management and Q&A
- CEO Ryan McMonagle framed the demand backdrop in explicitly cyclical terms: "we are in the early stages of what could be a once in a generation transmission demand supercycle," and said bidding activity and customer conversations support those conditions persisting "through the remainder of 2026, and beyond."
- Third-quarter trading was disclosed as a live data point, not a projection: both average OEC on rent and utilization have continued to grow year over year so far in Q3, and the STEM order backlog has grown from $322m at quarter-end to more than $340m currently.
- CFO Chris Eperjesy attributed roughly $19m of the $38.8m year-over-year net income improvement to a favorable income tax swing (the prior-year quarter carried a tax expense from an effective-rate adjustment), with the balance from higher operating income. That directly quantifies the tax-quality concern flagged in the preliminary.
- The first-half inventory build was characterized as planned — chassis and whole-goods positioning ahead of scheduled second-half deliveries plus a chassis pre-buy ahead of the EPA 2027 NOx rules. Management expects to reduce inventory and floor-plan balances in the second half.
- On the EPA 2027 NOx regulations: the proposed changes introduced in early July maintain the 2027 standards while adding non-conformance penalty provisions, are expected to be finalized later this year, and management believes its inventory position, completed pre-buy and OEM relationships leave it well positioned.
- Rental economics were quantified: on-rent yield of 39.4% rose both sequentially and year over year and sits inside the targeted upper-30s to low-40s range, with management claiming further rate opportunity as transmission mix grows.
- The available transcript ends at the first analyst question (on how much second-half revenue and adjusted EBITDA was pulled into Q2) when the call hit technical difficulties. No management answer to that question is present in the Quartr transcript, so no Q&A commentary is reported here.

- Third-quarter shape was guided down sequentially: consolidated revenue and adjusted EBITDA are expected to be up year over year but "modestly below second-quarter levels," because some second-half new and used equipment deliveries, including RPO buyouts, landed in Q2. Management stated this shifted results between quarters without reducing full-year expectations.
- Management flagged that rental year-over-year growth rates will naturally moderate from here as the company laps a second half of 2025 that posted its largest-ever increase in OEC on rent. Q4 remains the historically strongest quarter.
- STEM gross margin was slightly lower on increased national-account sales, which management says carry modestly lower margins. Backlog at ~3.5 months sits just below the targeted 4–6 month range.
- Segment comparability caveat repeated by IR: 2026 segment results apply intersegment pricing and margin, while 2025 segment results reflect intersegment sales at no margin. Year-over-year segment margin comparisons are therefore not like-for-like.
Updated neutral analysis
- The call supported rather than changed the release: the revenue and adjusted EBITDA beats are corroborated by rental KPIs (utilization 81.6%, OEC on rent +13%, yield 39.4%) that improved on every axis, and by a raised full-year guide at both ends of both ranges.
- The quality of the earnings beat is weaker than the headline. Management itself attributed half the year-over-year net income swing to a tax item, and separately said a portion of Q2's equipment sales was pulled forward from the second half. Both facts cut against extrapolating Q2's absolute level.
- The backlog picture is genuinely two-sided. It fell $89m sequentially to $322m and sits below the company's own 4–6 month target, but June quoting was up 26% year over year and the backlog has since recovered to more than $340m. The recovery is management-stated intra-quarter data, not a reported figure.
- The cash-flow bridge remains the open item from the preliminary. Management reaffirmed more than $50m of free cash flow and inventory/floor-plan reduction in the second half, but first-half operating cash flow was $68.2m against $181.4m a year earlier. Delivering the full-year cash target requires the working-capital reversal to actually occur in the next two quarters.
- Net fleet capex guidance was raised to $170–200m from a prior lower estimate. That is a demand-driven increase management frames positively, but it consumes cash against the same deleveraging target and moves in the opposite direction from the "significantly reduce fleet investment" narrative.
- The EPA 2027 NOx position is a stated readiness claim backed by a completed chassis pre-buy. The rules are not yet final, and the non-conformance penalty provisions are new; the cost pass-through is not quantified.
Market context and limitations
- API Ninjas snapshot: CTOS $10.63 on NYSE, volume 1,214,031, retrieved 2026-08-04T03:06:42Z. That quote was taken overnight after the after-market release and well before this call; it is not a measurement of the reaction to the call, and no post-call quote is included in this update.
- The Quartr transcript for this event ends at the first analyst question when the call encountered technical difficulties. Prepared remarks from both the CEO and CFO are complete; the Q&A is not present in the transcript Quartr serves, so this update carries no Q&A content.
- Automatic speech transcription garbles several segment names and figures in this transcript (for example "SCR" for SER and "Stem"/"in-market" for STEM/end-market). Segment revenue guidance is reported here as the transcript states it and should be checked against the investor presentation before being relied on precisely.
- Guidance, backlog-to-date and Q3 trading commentary are forward-looking management statements, not reported results.
