| Metric / basis | Quartr actual | API Ninjas consensus | Beat/Miss | Beat/Miss % |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue / net sales, consolidated statements of operations | $11,119.777m | $11,599.420m | Miss -$479.643m | -4.1% |
| EPS / adjusted diluted (non-GAAP net income per common share) | $1.70 | $0.923 | Beat +$0.777 | +84.2% |
- Carried forward unchanged from the 2026-08-11 preliminary report. Nothing on the call revised either actual, and neither management nor any of the nine analysts referenced a consensus estimate at any point. The call confirmed both figures against company guidance rather than consensus: CFO David Weigand stated Q4 revenue was "at the low end of our guidance range of $11 billion to $12.5 billion" and that non-GAAP diluted EPS of $1.70 compared with a guidance range of $0.65 to $0.79.
Management and Q&A
- The call ran with nine analysts: Ananda Baruah of Loop Capital, an associate on for Joseph Cardoso of J.P. Morgan, Asiya Merchant of Citi, Katherine Murphy of Goldman Sachs, Ruplu Bhattacharya of Bank of America, George Nader of Wolfe Research, Nehal Chokshi of Northland Capital Markets, Brandon Nispel of KeyBanc Capital Markets and Victor Chiu of Raymond James. CEO Charles Liang and CFO David Weigand presented; VP Michael Staiger read the introduction and answered one question.
- The gross-margin surprise was decomposed, and most of it is not repeatable. Weigand put Q4 non-GAAP gross margin at 17.6% against guidance of 8.2% to 8.4% and against 10.1% in Q3, a 750 basis-point sequential improvement. Roughly 75% came from better-than-anticipated customer and product mix, explicitly including "the deferral of several contracts from Q4 fiscal year 2026 to Q1 fiscal year 2027 and perhaps the subsequent quarter"; the remaining 25% came from lower tariff costs and lower inventory reserves.
- The CFO labelled the tariff benefit non-recurring and confirmed no rebate was booked. Asked by Brandon Nispel whether a tariff rebate was recognized, Weigand said no: the company is "actively pursuing refunds" but did not take the benefit "until we see them," and expects the industry view that tariffs "may go back up," so "we still kind of look at this as perhaps a one-time benefit." He separately called the quarter's tariff result "what we would consider a nonrecurring event." He also confirmed higher vendor rebates on "a different mix of business, more rebate-laden this quarter."
- The revenue miss was framed entirely as timing. Liang attributed the $11.1bn to "some short-term customer delays in power, shortage, cooling, and networking" and called it "purely a timing story"; Weigand said the shortfall was "due to delays in customer readiness" and "we anticipate this revenue to be recognized in subsequent quarters."
- The segment mix inverted, and this is new disclosure. AI solutions were approximately 60% of Q4 revenue against over 80% in Q3, which management attributed to the timing of large AI project ramps; they expect greater than 80% going forward on the current backlog. Enterprise and channel revenue was $5.6bn, 50% of total against 28% in Q3, up 172% year over year and 98% sequentially. OEM, appliance and large data center revenue was $5.5bn, also 50% against 72% in Q3, up 50% year over year but down 26% sequentially. For fiscal 2026 as a whole the split was 31% / 69%.
- Customer concentration and diversification were both quantified for the first time on this call. Fiscal 2026 had nine customers above $1bn of revenue each against four in fiscal 2025, and one large data center / CSP customer represented 28% of fiscal 2026 revenue. By geography Q4 was 71% U.S., 11% Asia, 8% Europe and 10% rest of world, with U.S. revenue up 259% year over year and Asia down 50%.
- Working-capital metrics deteriorated sharply and management guided them to reverse. The cash conversion cycle rose 43 days to 149 from 106 in Q3: days of inventory up 13 to 119, days sales outstanding down 26 to 59, and days payable outstanding down 56 to 29 on the completion of large AI GPU projects and supplier payment timing. Weigand said he expects the cycle to normalize on "improved terms" written into the current backlog, obtained from both new customers and tightened contracts with existing ones.
- The board investigation was raised and deflected. Asked by Ananda Baruah for an update on the board inquiry, the answer was: "we expect to provide an update shortly. That is all we can share on this call." No scope, finding or date was given.
- Funding of the fiscal 2027 ramp was addressed qualitatively. Weigand pointed to improved backlog terms and balance-sheet strength rather than new capital; Liang said that within the $65bn to $72bn range "our cash flow now is pretty enough," but "if they are changed to grow much higher revenue, then we may need more cash flow. For example, $80 billion or beyond $80 billion." Liang separately said the company has "no plans to utilize our ATM program" after the $5.6bn June financing.
- DCBBS was not sized. Asked by Nispel to update the prior guide of roughly 20% of gross profit and to give the fiscal 2026 revenue and gross-profit contribution, Liang gave no figure, saying only that "20% should be not far away" and that a proactive service package launches early next quarter.

- The Q1 FY2027 and FY2027 revenue and EPS ranges in the table of the preliminary report were reiterated on the call without change. Management gave no gross-margin, cash-flow or working-capital guidance for full-year fiscal 2027, and no revenue split by segment or geography was guided. The fiscal 2027 quiet period was stated to begin at the close of business on Friday, 2026-09-11.
Updated neutral analysis
- The preliminary's largest open question - the durability of the 17.5% gross margin - is now answered, and the answer is that it was largely a one-quarter event. Three quarters of the improvement came from mix that includes contracts deferred out of the quarter, and the balance came from tariff and inventory-reserve items the CFO twice characterized as non-recurring. The Q1 FY2027 guide of 10.4% to 10.8% sits below even the 10.9% fiscal 2026 non-GAAP full-year rate.
- The revenue miss and the EPS beat are the same event. Contracts deferred out of Q4 both reduced revenue below the guided range and improved the mix that produced most of the margin beat. Management's own decomposition makes the two results mechanically linked rather than independent, which is not visible from the release alone.
- The Q1 FY2027 earnings guide is now fully explained and the explanation is unflattering on margin but partly technical on share count. Guided revenue of $14.5bn to $15.5bn against $11.1bn reported comes with gross margin guided roughly 700 basis points lower, a non-GAAP share count rising from 721m to 761m, and a new two-class allocation of income to the $4.2bn of mandatory convertible preferred issued in Q4. The preliminary flagged the implied margin decline; the call confirms it and adds the dilution mechanics.
- The enterprise pivot is real in the quarter's numbers but its margin contribution is unquantified. Enterprise and channel revenue nearly doubled sequentially to half of total revenue while large data center revenue fell 26%, and management repeatedly framed enterprise and CPU/storage as the higher-margin vertical. No enterprise gross margin, no DCBBS revenue and no DCBBS gross-profit figure was disclosed, so the claim that mix will lift margins over time cannot be tested against a company figure.
- Customer concentration is higher than the diversification narrative suggests. Nine billion-dollar customers against four is genuine broadening, but one data center / CSP customer at 28% of fiscal 2026 revenue was disclosed in the same breath, and the Q4 sequential decline in that segment came alongside the customer-readiness delays. No quarterly concentration figure was given.
- The working-capital question the preliminary raised is answered with terms rather than with cash. A 149-day cash conversion cycle, $12.9bn of closing inventory and a 56-day drop in payables sit against a guided revenue step to $14.5bn-$15.5bn. Management's answer is improved contract terms in the backlog plus balance-sheet capacity, and Liang explicitly identified $80bn as the level at which additional funding would be needed. No fiscal 2027 operating cash-flow target was offered.
- The board review remains the one item with no new information at all. The only update is that an update is expected "shortly," which leaves the release's own caveat - that the review's outcome could affect these preliminary results and prior periods - entirely intact.
Market context and limitations
- API Ninjas price snapshot for SMCI: $31.60 on NASDAQ, timestamped 2026-08-11T22:16:22Z, roughly 18:16 Eastern. That is the identical price the preliminary recorded at 20:12:45Z, and this later print reports volume of 0 against 62,151,716 earlier, so it is a stale or carried-forward quote. No post-call or after-hours reaction is characterized here.
- The complete transcript for event 660964 was read: 96 of 96 paragraphs, approximately 40,500 characters of speaker text, with
available=trueandisLive=falseconfirming a finished call. Prepared remarks and the full Q&A are covered. The preliminary was written before the call and used none of this content. - This transcript carries visible automatic-speech-recognition errors, including the company name repeatedly substituted with analyst names, mangled product names ("£0.03 203", "Baruah base solution", "TCP" for DCBBS, "Salman"-class substitutions), and at least one mis-transcribed figure ("$0.107 in non-GAAP diluted earnings per share" where the release states $1.70). Only figures that are internally consistent with the release or that were restated in a second form on the call are used above; nothing was inferred from a garbled passage.
- Every scorecard actual continues to come from Quartr earnings release document 3672700 as read for the preliminary. No new estimate retrieval was performed for this stage and no figure in the scorecard was revised.
- Slide deck 4004574 belongs to a different event; the deck attached to this event, document 4004551, was not read. Any figure presented only on a slide is not reflected here.
- The Q4 non-GAAP gross margin of 17.6% cited on the call sits alongside the release's GAAP gross margin of 17.5%; both are used above with their basis labelled, and neither is a restatement of the other.
- Figures management rounded differently from the release are not adopted as new data: revenue of "$11.1 billion" against $11,119.777m and fiscal-year revenue of "$39.1 billion" against the release's figure. All are consistent roundings.
- Management's characterizations of tariff direction, industry expectations and customer readiness are recorded above as statements made on the call, not as verified facts. The release's own statement that these results are preliminary and unaudited was not withdrawn or modified on the call.
