ESEA Q2 2026 - Preliminary Earnings Alert
Verdict
- Revenue beat, barely: total net revenues of $56.5m against $55.98m consensus, +0.9% — but down 1.2% year on year on an average 21.0 vessels operated versus 22.0.
- EPS beat, decisively: adjusted diluted EPS of $4.70 against $4.09 consensus, +14.9%. GAAP diluted was $4.74.
- No guidance given, as usual. Declared a $0.80 quarterly dividend, expanded the newbuilding program to 12 vessels for delivery from Q3 2027 to Q1 2029, and disclosed 480,460 shares (6.8% of the count) repurchased to date for $11.36m.
- The one thing that matters: the earnings beat is cost, not commercial. Revenue fell and the TCE rate rose only 3.0% to $30,306 per day; the profit gain came from three cost lines — zero drydockings ($0.2m against $1.7m), depreciation down to $6.7m from $7.3m on a smaller fleet, and interest down 32% to $2.7m. Only the interest line is durable.

Quality of earnings
- Revenue fell, profit rose, and the bridge is entirely cost. Net income attributable to controlling shareholders rose 11.0% to $33.2m on 1.2% lower revenue: drydock cost $0.2m against $1.7m, vessel depreciation $6.7m against $7.3m, and interest and financing costs $2.7m against $4.0m.
- The adjustment is small and disclosed. Adjusted net income of $32.9m differs from the $33.2m attributable figure only by a $0.3m unrealized gain on equity securities, giving adjusted diluted EPS of $4.70 against GAAP diluted $4.74.
- A minority loss flatters the per-share line. Consolidated net income was $32.6m while $33.2m was attributable to controlling shareholders; the $0.6m gap is the loss borne by the 49% NRP partnership interest in M/V Thrylos, a structure that did not exist a year ago.
Gotchas & watch items
- No vessel was drydocked in the quarter and the $0.2m charged relates to supplies for upcoming drydocks. The prior-year quarter carried $1.7m. That cost is deferred, not avoided.
- Unit costs are rising on both lines: daily vessel opex +6.2% to $7,116 on a weaker dollar and a management fee raised to EUR 875 from EUR 840 per day, and G&A +32.6% to $920 per vessel per day from $694.
- Charter coverage drops from over 95% for the rest of 2026 to 47% for 2028, so the visibility underwriting the current run-rate is finite and re-charter risk sits in 2028.
- $208.1m of debt against $164.3m of restricted and unrestricted cash, with a 12-vessel newbuilding program, the $0.80 dividend and an open buyback all drawing on the same balance sheet.
