Highlights & what matters
- Revenue beat: $8.04 billion against a $7.71 billion estimate (+4.3%), up 42% on 217,385 retail units (+39%), both company records.
- Guidance moved up within the range: full-year adjusted EBITDA is now expected at the higher end of $2.7 billion to $3.0 billion, with a sequential increase in Q4 retail units.
- Growth is outrunning margin. Adjusted EBITDA rose $163 million to a record $800 million, but adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 10% from 11.3% on a higher-priced vehicle mix and lower other GPU (-$299 per unit).
- GAAP profit is improving faster than the adjusted measure: net income rose $220 million to $483 million and net income margin widened to 6% from 4.7%, despite a $53 million one-time debt redemption charge.
- The one thing that matters: unit growth accelerated to 39% in a flat market and the binding limit is still reconditioning capacity, not demand. Per-unit margin is giving ground to lower customer rates, fuel and a higher-priced mix.

Management commentary
- The CEO said growth is limited mainly by how fast Carvana can scale reconditioning, and that focused production has lifted the prime customer mix toward more expensive, later-model cars.
- The CFO said Carvana has been passing some benchmark rate increases through to customers with a lag, which kept other GPU roughly flat quarter over quarter despite rising rates.
- The CEO said moves in gas prices and interest rates hit the quarter by "about $200 per unit" and restated the 13.5% adjusted EBITDA margin goal, which maps to a 12.5% operating income margin.
- The CFO said 2027 reporting will shift emphasis from adjusted EBITDA toward GAAP operating income and net income.
- Management said advertising spend per unit rose $45 and will keep growing for now to keep pressure on the business while inventory catches up, with advertising leverage expected only over the long term.
Quality of earnings
- GAAP and adjusted profit sit close together. GAAP operating income of $714 million was 89% of the $800 million adjusted EBITDA and grew $162 million, in line with the $163 million adjusted EBITDA gain.
- Reported net income understates the quarter. The $483 million includes a one-time $53 million pre-tax expense on the early redemption of senior-secured notes, and the refinancing is expected to save about $45 million a year in interest.
Gotchas & watch items
- Per-unit profit shrank below the record headline: other GPU fell $299 and wholesale GPU fell $196, while retail GPU rose only $85.
- Fuel is cutting into the cost structure: operations expense rose $109 per retail unit on fuel and logistics, offset only by a $159 per-unit drop in overhead from scale. Management put the combined gas and interest-rate hit at about $200 per unit.
- Selection is lagging sales: management said growth in cars immediately available on the website is well below its sales growth, while production reached a record of more than 200,000 units.
- The balance sheet is at its strongest: net debt to trailing adjusted EBITDA fell to 0.8x and adjusted EBITDA to interest expense reached 6.9x, both company records.
